Red Sox pitching excels

On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox lost 5-1 to the Baltimore Orioles at City of Palms Park. The game lasted two hours and 27 minutes.

On Monday, they beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 15-14 in Bradenton. That game lasted four hours and 10 minutes.

Only one run was scored through five innings Tuesday.

"The first five or six innings were crisp," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

Tuesday's game was marked by fine pitching.

Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz continued to impress, pitching three shutout innings.

He's allowed one earned run in eight innings and hasn't walked a batter. Buchholz, who may not have a spot in the starting rotation, may make it hard for the team to ship him to the minors.

"The hope here is that everybody makes it hard," Francona said.

Minor league pitcher Daniel Bard showed his mettle after allowing a two-out walk and single. He struck out shortstop Blake Davis to end the inning.

"It was nice to see because he's had some easy innings," Francona said of Bard pitching with men on base.

RHP Brad Penny threw live batting practice for the first time this spring.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher will work two innings in a minor league game Friday morning at the team's Fort Myers training facility.

The team announced numerous moves and deals Tuesday.

The team agreed to terms with 19 players on the major league roster on one-year contracts.

Agreeing to terms were: Pitchers Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, Manny Delcarmen, Felix Doubront, Miguel Gonzalez, Devern Hansack, Hunter Jones, Jon Lester, Wes Littleton, Justin Masterson and Ramon Ramirez; catchers Dusty Brown, George Kottaras and Mark Wagner; infielders Chris Carter, Argenis Diaz, and Jed Lowrie; and outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Jonathan Van Every.

All 40 players on Boston's major league roster are under contract.

The following roster moves were announced: INF Argenis Diaz was optioned to Double-A Portland.

Pitchers Kris Johnson, Dustin Richardson and Charlie Zink and catcher Carlos Maldonado, all non-roster invitees, were reassigned to minor league camp.

Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart was at the park Tuesday promoting the Red Sox Album, a compilation of Red Sox and baseball songs such as "Sweet Caroline" and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

The Red Sox are off today, the second of three successive Wednesdays off.

Pawtucket Red Sox manager Ron Johnson's son, Chris, continues to do well in the Houston Astros camp.

Chris Johnson, a Bishop Verot High graduate, is hitting .375 with a team-high six RBI. Houston veteran third basemen Aaron Boone and Geoff Blum are a combined 2-for-31.

Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia, who is playing for the United States in the World Baseball Classic, is doing a WBC blog for weei.com, the Web site of Boston radio station WEEI-AM.
