Why The San Francisco Giants Should Pick Up John Smoltz

by Andy Bensch

Let's face it, when a 42-year-old pitcher attempts to rehab what should be a career ending injury and come back to the Major Leagues, the American League East is not the place to do it.

Trying to make his comeback as a member of the Red Sox, Smoltz had to face lethal AL East hitters such as Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Brian Roberts, Luke Scott, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, and Matt Weiters.

Four of his eight starts came against the aforementioned hitters, as Smoltz faced the Orioles three times and the Yankees once, in his final start before being released.

San Francisco Giants Can't Kick The Road Funk

by Danny Penza

Great pitching and non-existent hitting—that's what sums up the Giants' road performances as the 2009 season as gone on.

How bad has it been this year with the sticks? Let's play a little compare and contrast.

Home: 4.38 runs per game in 59 games (39-20 record)

Road: 3.51 runs per game in 58 games (24-34 record)

Even with the best pitching staff in the game, those kind of run numbers on the road aren't going to get it done and the record reflects just that.

The beginning of the current season-high 11-game road trip has produced more of the same frustrations that we all saw to begin the season, to begin the second half, and basically every road trip in between.

Underrated Infielder Rich Aurilia One of the Best Giants to Ever Play by the Bay

by Evan Aczon

NO.

SLEEP.

TILL BROOKLYN.

When Rich Aurilia steps out of the dugout, every Giants fan knows what his walk-up music is.

That one clip from the Beastie Boys is indicative of Aurilia’s career, one that may soon be coming to a close.

Aurilia went on the disabled list again before Wednesday’s game, diagnosed with “ankle tendinitis.”

This marked the second time in less than two weeks that the San Francisco Giants put their veteran infielder on the DL with arguably a phantom ailment, putting him on the shelf on July 21 with a “big toe infection.”

If it were anyone else on the Giants roster, like a Dave Roberts or Keiichi Yabu, he would have been designated for assignment and released. But Brian Sabean, and the rest of the Giants organization, just can’t let that happen.

San Francisco Giants Mess with the Johan—The Umpires Do Not

by Andrew Nuschler

Fresh off a contentious series against the hated Los Angeles Dodgers that saw every single close play go the Bums' way (and some not so close ones), the San Francisco Giants landed in New York City to take on the Metropolitans. No natural animosity there so we thought maybe things would calm down—both on the fracas detail and the umpiring front.

Two games into the four-game set, it appears that might not be the case.

The judgment of the blues has been good so far, nothing egregious as I've seen it. Even so, the umpires still find ways to shaft the Gents.

The San Francisco Giants hold the second-best home record (31-15) in the Majors behind the Boston Red Sox and they are hoping to continue their success in AT&T Park. The Giants’ next 13 games will be played in San Francisco, so now’s the time for the team to turn things around.

Returning from their 10-game road trip with a 3-7 record, the Giants take on the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games. The Pirates took the previous series 2-1 and have won seven of their last nine games in AT&T Park.

Fate of the Franchise

by Evan Aczon

With the San Francisco Giants barely off the All-Star Break and seemingly poised for a playoff push, a lot of fans are overlooking the fact that this team wasn't expected to contend until 2010, as was envisioned by general manager Brian Sabean, former team president Peter Magowan, and his successor Bill Neukom.

In light of that, last week's piece about the future of Tim Lincecum will now be the first in a series of articles that looks at each position for the Giants and assesses the situation for next season. Each player on the roster will be looked at, weighing their contract situation, performance, and their overall fit into the puzzle of the "Giants Way."

The San Francisco Giants Will Make Playoffs, the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs Will Not

by Mark Strotman

Heading into tonight’s action in the National League, it has become apparent that just six teams in the league are left that have a shot at competing for the playoffs and the NL pennant.

The Pirates, Reds, Brewers, and Astros really have no shot at winning the Central this year. The Astros and Brewers are within reaching distance, but trends say they are out of it.

In the East, the Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves are both inside seven games of the Philadelphia Phillies, but with the acquisition of Cliff Lee to the pitching staff, I will go ahead and say the Phillies will roll into the playoffs.
