As the likes of CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira cash in the big bucks and teams like the Mets and the Yankees go about writing checks out, it is easy to forget the small, but key, moves the Red Sox have made this off-season.
But how can you overlook the signing of future Hall of Famer John Smoltz, or two time NL All-Star Brad Penny, Rocco Baldelli, Brad Wilkerson, or relievers Takashi Saito and Ramon Ramirez?
All of those moves added depth to the Red Sox squad and all of those moves were low risk with high value. John Smoltz and Brad Penny can both be huge impacts in the pitching rotation and can help out if Buchholz struggles or if anyone gets injured.
Baldelli adds a better bat off the bench rather than Sean Casey and Coco Crisp. He's a home town boy with a lot of potential.
I don't see the Yankees winning the division this year, they have a lot of big name players, but they always do. They haven't been in the World Series since 2003 or even won the World Series since 2000.
I believe that the Rays will struggle, last year, they just had timely hitting, that was their whole offense, I just don't see them having as much luck as they did last year.
The Red Sox are built with depth, and have a good core of key players; Youk, Pedroia, Ortiz, Bay, and a really good pitching staff, Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, and Papelbon.
I see the Red Sox coming in first with the Yankees in second, and the Rays close but in third. Look to see the Sox go deep into the postseason because that is what they are built for.
